“For 16 years the runners of metro-Atlanta and Georgia have been treated to one of the fastest 10K races in the state,” Jenkins says. “This year, these same runners will also be treated to one of the fastest 5K races around.” In addition to the 5K, there will also be a one-mile Fun Run open to all runners and a 50-yard Tot Trot for aspiring runners ages five and under. It is held at Heritage Green located in the heart of Sandy Springs next to CityWalk. One-day admission is $5 for adults and $2 for youth ages 6-18; children five and under are free. Admission for Heritage Sandy Springs members is free. For information, call 404-851-9111 or log on to www.sandyspringsfestival.com.
The Festival serves as a testament to the citizens of the community who joined together to champion causes and improve the quality of life decades before Sandy Springs became a city. When the site of the original springs was threatened with commercial development in 1985, the “Save Our Springs” movement was born, and later that year, the Williams-Payne House was relocated from Mount Vernon Highway to the site of the original springs.
“Moving the Williams-Payne House to the historic site marked a very important day in Sandy Springs history,” says Dottie Megel, president of the Fulton County Federation of Garden Clubs at the time of the relocation. “The county closed the roads and we christened the house that night with a celebration complete with champagne!”
These grassroots efforts resulted in the formation of the Sandy Springs Historic Community Foundation, known today as Heritage Sandy Springs. They celebrated their efforts with a Founders Day Celebration, which expanded into the annual fundraiser known as the Sandy Springs Festival. “We hope to continue this tradition of community and history through a celebratory Festival this year,” says Christy Nickles, Special Events Director for Heritage Sandy Springs.
Sandy Springs Festival offers 10 distinct areas to visit: the Artist’s Market, SSBA Business & Civic Expo, Target Children’s Park, Tom Jumper Chevrolet Collector Car Show, The Food Court, Heritage Crafters, Kiwanis Pet Parade, Meyer Closings Silent Auction, The Teen Territory, and various venues for live, local entertainment. The Sandy Springs Festival’s presenting sponsors are The Sandy Springs Society, City of Sandy Springs, Sandy Springs Hospitality and Tourism, WSB 750 AM, and Star 94 FM.
